The painting is from a morning walk in Quindalup. Like notes on sheet music, the galahs dot the power lines overhead. The scene struck me as an allegory of 2020-life; for a time, the birds and nature attempted to regain a foothold in our absence. The more I paint South West scenes, the more I’m drawn to them. Whole stories unfold in the stillness of a single street, particularly in the quietude of the early morning. Grassy gardens, some green, some heat-burnt and the odd orange-dirt driveway on streets lined with heavy-set trees and old utility poles. There is an underlying feeling to these places, a warm contentedness and an appetite for a slower pace of life.
